Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
