Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
