Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
