The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Comes After Poor Response
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a more defined game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement follows a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our audience.
The trust in this project grows every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, he starts with us on next week.
His leadership and background in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him next week. We are all excited to keep witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.
David
Background of the Incoming Head
The appointee presently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that evolve every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and hope your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
The game lacks an official launch window or consoles, but players can expect further news as creation continues.
